Enjoy the Vineyard Global Advisors  Quarterly Webinar Replay!

3rd Quarter-2022

“The Bear Market Continues, but Signs of a Bottom Begin to Appear.”

The markets are incredibly fluid right now at a time that follows one of the most significant buy thrusts in the past 20 years, explains Thomas Samuelson, CFA, CMT, Chief Investment Officer of Vineyard Global Advisors, a risk-managed, separate account manager. Our third quarter investor webinar focused on market and economic trends that impact investor portfolios.

Presenter: Tom Samuelson, CIO of Vineyard Global Advisors
Original Broadcast: Wednesday, October 26th, 2022

Fed Actions Continued Full Speed Ahead

As the third quarter of 2022 played out, inflation data came in higher than expected, the Fed continued its rapid rate hikes, and declines continued across all major indices.

The Markets are Like a Boxing Match

There’s a battle between improving technicals and weak macro trends that is reminiscent of a boxing match. We may be in the 11th or 12th round of the boxing match right now.

The Next Domino to Fall

Negative headwinds continue to impact the economy as Fed Chairman Jay Powell tightens the reigns and asset prices respond accordingly. The Fed doesn’t want sustained bull market at a time without supply.

Additional Headwinds to Watch

If inflation persists, we can expect more interest rate hikes from the Fed. An additional headwind is the fact that if there is a cold winter in Europe, there may be an energy crisis.

The Bull Case

It is clear that equity valuations are stretched and below long-term averages. In the short run, inflation is coming down. Since recessions typically only last one year this period is not expected to be systematic.

Mid-Terms Elections – What Do They Mean for the Markets?

Polls show that Republicans are poised to retake power in the House of Representatives, which represents the optimal balance of power for the markets. Studies show that the best year for the stock markets is the third year into the presidential cycle and the United States is now in year two.

What’s in Store for the Balance of 2022?

We still need more pieces to fall into place. Certain investment strategies are positioned to continue to mitigate the downside damage of the current bear market through year-end.
